3 Methods of Grilling Potatoes

Grilling Potato Wedges Directly on a Grill

One common way of cooking potatoes on a grill is by cutting them into wedges and directly cooking them over a grill. But how do you go about it?

The Process

  1. Clean your potatoes and then cut them half lengthwise. Go further and cut each half into 4 thin wedges. However, if your potatoes are thicker, you may consider cutting extra wedges.
  2. Then put them in a bowl where you’ll add some olive oil. Thoroughly mix the olive oil with the potatoes before adding your favorite seasoning.
  3. Preheat your electric grill to medium heat.
  4. Lastly, put the potato wedges straight directly to the grill for cooking. The wedges should be perpendicular to the grooves of the grill’s cooking surface.
  5. Your potato wedges should cook for about 20 minutes. However, you should flip your potatoes from time to time to prevent them from burning and enhance cooking on both sides.

If you like grilled potatoes that are crispy on the outside and soft inside, this is the technique you should consider.

Parboiling Potatoes before Grilling

Another method of cooking potatoes is parboiling them before placing them on a hot grill’s cooking surface. Generally, you’ll partially cook the potatoes before they completely cook on the grill.

The Process

  1. Start by cleaning your potatoes
  2. Then slice them.
  3. Put them in boiling water for about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Drain the water and place your parboiled potato slices in a different container.
  5. Now, coat your potato slices with olive oil and your favorite seasoning. You also consider adding some herbs combined with mayonnaise to enhance the taste and keep them tender.
  6. Preheat your electric grill for about 10 minutes. It should be medium hot.
  7. Place the seasoned potatoes on the preheated grill for cooking. Allow them to cook for about 5-10 minutes till the exterior is well charred.

Sliced Potatoes in Foil Packets

Another excellent method of grilling potatoes is cooking them in foil packets. First, you have to cut them into slices. What is unique about this technique is that you can grill your potatoes raw or parboiled. So, how do you make grilled potatoes in foil packets?

The Process

  1. Clean your potatoes before you cut them into ¼ inch slices. However, you can still cut them into wedges.
  2. If you find it necessary, you may partially cook your potato slices in boiling water for about 10 minutes (optional).
  3. Cut a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil (about 10-12 inches long) and place it on the flat surface. If you have many slices of potatoes, consider cutting various pieces of foil to make enough potato pockets.
  4. Take your potato slices and place them on foil sheets.
  5. Then use a basting brush to apply olive oil on top. Also, add your favorite seasoning, herbs, chopped garlic, chopped onion, or pepper to the potatoes.
  6. Then fold/wrap the ends of foil to make a pack.
  7. Preheat your electric grill to medium heat.
  8. Place your potato pockets over the grill for cooking. They cook for about 20-30 minutes on the grill. However, you should regularly turn the pocket to ensure both sides cook evenly.

This particular method (foil packets) also works best with sweet potato slices.

FAQs

What does soaking potatoes in water do?

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch, making potatoes have a sticky texture on the exterior. You should strictly soak potatoes in cold water and not hot water. Hot water can easily react and activate the starch. This process should take about 2-4 hours.

Can you grill potatoes without boiling them first?

Yes, you can cook raw potatoes directly on a grill without boiling them first. However, grilling raw potatoes means increased cooking time over medium heat to allow even cooking on the inside and the exterior.
